Day 1: Pickup from Kigali and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Your driver/guide will pick you up from either the airport or your accommodation in Kigali. The Guide will educate you on the tour and what to expect. If you need to buy something, he’ll be the finest person to tell you where to go. Following the briefing, the driver will take you on a half-day Kigali city tour. This trip includes visits to the genocide memorial site, the old presidential palace, the main city markets, and souvenir stores. You will then enjoy lunch at one of Kigali’s top restaurants or hotels.
After lunch, your driver guide will the journey to Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. This journey takes two hours, and you should be at the lodge by 4 p.m. for check-in and refreshments. In the evening, you can request that the Guide take you on a tour of Lake Ruhondo and Burera or to Musanze town before returning for dinner.
Day 2: Gorilla Trek and Visit Iby’iwacu Village
Wake up early enough to eat breakfast before being transported to the park headquarters for a briefing. You should ask your hotel staff to make light food for you when following gorillas. While visiting the park headquarters, you will encounter park wardens, rangers, the majority of other park authorities, and many guests who have come for various activities.
The park officials will advise you on the activity and give facts on mountain gorillas, including what to anticipate and how to behave while tracking. Following the briefing, you will be given a gorilla family based on your overall fitness level, availability, and personal preferences.
You have only one hour after you discover the gorillas. After witnessing the family play, groom, and feed, it’s time to depart. You will return to the starting location to find our driver waiting for you, who will then transport you to the park offices to rest.
Afterwards in the afternoon or evening, the Driver/Guide will take you to see the Gorilla Guardian Village. The Centre, formerly known as the Iby’iwacu cultural hamlet, offers an immersive experience of the three Rwandan tribes’ cultures.
You’ll also have the option to purchase mementos for your family and friends back home. Don’t forget to pay a visit to the local medicine man and discover how common ailments were treated before medication was adopted.
Day 3: Hike to Dian Fossey Tomb and Transfer Back to Kigali.
Wake up early as usual and eat breakfast while waiting for the Guide to take you to the park headquarters for another briefing. You will next go to the mountain slopes, following the same path.
Fossey performed this many times in a month decades ago. During the trip, the rangers will tell you all about Dian Fossey’s work with gorillas, her foundation, and her legacy. You will get the opportunity to meet some of the porters who worked with her at the time and hear their own accounts of their experiences working with her. Dian Fossey is buried beside Digit, her favorite gorilla.
You will also see her previous workstation and the Karisoke Research Centre, which is now quite decrepit. After finishing the Dian Fossey cemetery trek, you will descend and meet the Guide, who will drive you back to the hotel to check out and begin your return journey to Kigali.
