Who Killed Dian Fossey?
Who Killed Dian Fossey? You cannot talk about gorilla trekking in Africa and Dian Fossey won’t cross any of your conversation an American primatologist that is so instrumental in the conservation of the gorillas in the wild. Dian Fossey gained interest in the mountain gorillas in Africa after reading George Schaller’s work, an archaeologist that was interested in learning more about the primates in the wild and she got to know more about the mountain gorillas in the wild which helped her gain much more interest in the gorillas Due to her dedication to the gorillas along the Virunga mountains in Congo, Dr Louis Leakey was impressed by her work and hired her to study the gorillas in the Virunga massif where she started her work in Congo.
Due to the political instability in the Democratic Republic of Congo in Virunga National Park where she was kidnapped by the rebels but with hr escape from the rebel she fled to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda where she established the Karisoke research station in between mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke where she carried out gorilla habituation in Africa. During her stay in Rwanda, volcanoes national park, Dian Fossey carried pout a number of conservation policies to increase the numbers of gorillas that were already depleting.
During her work in Volcanoes national park, dian Fossey realized that among the different problems that affected the gorilla numbers were quite many including natural calamities like diseases like Ebola which killed a number of gorillas in the wild but one that could be controlled that was also a threat to the gorillas was poaching after the discovery of a number of traps in the park, snares, the poachers were also killing the adult males and females to acquired number of infants that were smuggled to other countries or killed for meat and with this a number of gorillas were killed and buried at the gorilla cemetery which infuriated dian Fossey that considered the gorillas as her friends and after the killing of her best gorilla Digit, she took it upon herself to put an end to the gruesome act on her gorilla friends.
This led to the introduction of patrols in the park where the traps were confiscated, snares destroyed, she went an extra mile to fight against poaching by burning the houses of the poachers and killing their dogs and in turn she gained more enemies than friends among the locals around the park and this was no surprise when she was found dead in her cabin on December 26 1985. After being killed by a machete. Most people believe she was killed by one of poachers and some think the rebels in Congo where she escaped before settling in volcanoes national park but until this day the person that killed Dian Fossey is not yet known which is so heart-breaking for a person that made gorilla trekking in Africa possible with coming up with a number of ways to make the gorillas sustainable.
