VIRUNGA MOUNTAINS IN CONGO

Virunga Mountains in Congo : The Virunga mountains in Congo are among the top tourist attractions that have attracted a number of tourists from all over the world. Mount Nyiragongo

Mount Nyiragongo is the most famous of the Virunga mountains because of the fact that the mountain had the largest lava lake in the world with high volumes of the lava which could be seen when tourists took part in Nyiragongo hike. However, with the fact that the mountain recently erupted after the 2002 eruption which claimed a number of lives, the mountain erupted again in 2021 which drained the mountain of all its lava leaving the crater empty but a number of researchers have confirmed that the mountain has started getting back it lava which has increased the hope for people interested in watching the lava underneath the earth’s crust and also hike the famous mount Nyiragongo as part of the memorable activities in Virunga national park

Mount Mikeno

Another interesting Virunga mountain in Congo is mount Mikeno which can also be found in Virunga national park the home to the endangered mountain gorillas in Congo. The mountain has the  second highest peak  among the Virunga mountains after mount bisoke in volcanoes national park in Rwanda. The word Mikeno means poor and this was derived from its slopes that do not favour human settlement and this attracted the settlement of the mountain gorillas on its slopes and for tourists interested in taking part in gorilla trekking in Virunga national park, they will access the habituated gorilla families on the slopes of the mountain which will give you one hour  to spend time with the gorillas which will help you understand more about the habituated gorilla families, some of the different features that you will get to understand how they co-exist with one another, their social hierarchy, you will get to see the dominant male of the group also known as the silverback that has all the overall rights in the gorilla family.

Mount Nyamuragira

Mount Nyamuragira is another active volcano in the park that has at least erupted forty times and its last eruption was seen in 2011 however the eruption was not as intense as that of mount Nyiragongo.  While hiking mount Nyamuragira, you will get to see a the caldera on top of the mountain and a number of mountains that have been formed from the eruptions and over time most of them have been see disappearing without any known reasons the hike will also give you rewarding attractions of the park and a number of interesting views of mount Nyiragongo and mount Mikeno not forgetting the different wildlife that can be seen at the start of your hike.

Mount karisimbi

Mount karisimbi can be seen in Virunga national park and volcanoes national park and to be different from mount Nyamuragira and Nyiragongo, it is a dormant volcano and it is the highest among the Virunga mountains and the 11^th among the highest mountains in Africa which is quite a fascinating mountain to hike if you’re interested in having an amazing time in the national park among the notable attractions that can be seen along the slopes are the golden monkeys an endangered species that you can also understand when you take part in golden monkey trekking , you will also get to see a number of Albertine rift endemic bird species, birds from the Congo biome for an amazing time in the park.
