Birds to see this summer : Bird watching is one of the most adds on activity on safaris in Uganda and in the East African region. Almost 98% of the people that will go for game drives, primate trekking, boat rides and nature walks will have a birding experience added there in.
Well if you are one of the bird enthusiasts visiting Uganda and East Africa this season. These are some of the birds you will be blessed to see in the different habitats.
Shoe bill stork
That gets its name from its shoe-shaped bill, it’s one of the commonest birds in the region. It lives in water logged places and you can easily find it the Akagera National Park in Rwanda. Uganda in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
kivu ground thrush
The kivu ground thrush also known as the Abyssinian ground thrush is an Albertine rift endemic bird species that you can only see in Bwindi impenetrable national park, Mgahinga national park, volcanoes national park and Virunga national park however the sightings of the kivu ground thrush are quite many in Bwindi as compared to other national parks.
regal sunbird
The regal sunbird is also native to the Albertine rift and as you participate in your birding expedition in the park, you will get the chance to see the males colourful green, yellow and red bird species with a long bill and tail and the females drabbing a brown colour. The females have a similarity to the double collared sunbirds but are much paler than them coming more to the yellow tones.
doherty’s bushrike
The Doherty’s bushrike I a medium sized coloured bird species with bright red forehead, broad black breast band and a right lemon yellow lemon and yellow green underparts for the adults and for the young ones, they are pale green with finely defined yellow green underparts.
Birds to see this summer : rwenzori night jar
This medium sized bird has a small pale mark in the outer wing which is among the most eye catching feature of the species. This can be seen in the forest clearings of Bwindi forests clearings and edges and the grasslands of the park and when you approach them you will hear the distinctive high pitch whistles ‘’chwee- chwee that are also among the most catching features of the species and just like the grauer’s broadbill, they can be seen feeding on fruit, invertebrates and larvae.
Birds to see this summer : black billed turaco
The black billed turaco can be seen within sub-Saharan Africa and central Africa, Bwindi impenetrable national park. The bird is 40cm long which is similar to the green turaco but with a difference of its all black bill and white crest. The bird can be found 16 feet above the ground within the montane forests of the park and once you get to it you can hear it making the ‘’khwa kkhaw kwah’’ sound.
grauer’s broadbill
Also known as the African broad bill, is a unique eye catching bird with a buffy crown, can be found usually in pairs but they can also be found singly. The fly catcher can be seen in the lower canopy and at middle levels of primary Albertine rift forest within 1760m and 2500m. this Albertine rift endemic bird species can only be found in Bwindi impenetrable national park and Kahuzi Biega national park The bird commonly feeds on fruit flower buds and invertebrates like centipedes, millipedes, larvae.
handsome francolin
The handsome francolin the most common bird species that can be seen during your birding experience in Bwindi impenetrable national park and this has gained popularity over the years because of their general appearance. They can be seen during the evenings on road paths in pairs walking on their feet. As you get closer to them, you will get to hear them call one another with the kroo and kree notes.
