Most visited destinations in Uganda
There are different destinations in Uganda which tourists visit during the year and some of the most visited include the following;
- Bwindi national park
Uganda is home to a big population of mountain gorillas which can be seen in two destinations which include Bwindi national park and Mgahinga national park.
Bwindi national park is the most visited destination in Uganda for gorilla trekking experiences as compared to Mgahinga national park and it is located in the south western part of Uganda.
When visiting Bwindi national park, tourists can also engage in many other activities including gorilla habituation in the Rushaga sector. Other sectors where gorilla trekking is done in Bwindi include Buhoma sector, Nkuringo sector and Ruhija sector.
Bwindi national park can also be visited for exciting Batwa community tours, bird watching and also hiking and guided nature walks around the dense forests.
- Murchison falls national park
For wildlife lovers, Murchison falls national park is another destination in Uganda which many tourists visit during their safaris.
Murchison falls national park is located in north western Uganda and is known for the magnificent waterfalls which are formed along the River Nile and tourists can also see many wildlife species when touring the national park with over 75 mammal species including 4 of the big 5 animals such as elephants, lions, leopards and buffalos.
Activities which can be done around Murchison falls national park include game drives, boat rides to the bottom of the Murchison falls, hiking to the top of the falls, viewing the falls, bird watching, chimpanzee tracking in Budongo forest and also guided nature walks.
The national park is known for its diverse scenery including open savannah plains, woodlands, riverine forests and also wetland areas where different wildlife and bird species can be spotted during safaris in Uganda.
Some of the wildlife species found in Murchison falls national park include Rothschild giraffes, hippos, impalas, elands, dik dik, kudu, waterbucks, Uganda kobs, reedbucks, warthogs and many others.
- Kibale forest national park
Kibale forest national park is a destination in western Uganda which is visited for primate tours especially chimpanzee tracking experiences.
The national park has over 13 species of primates which can be seen when exploring the Kibale forest which also has numerous bird species as well as different butterfly species. Tourists during their visits to Kibale forest national park can engage in bird watching, visiting the chimpanzees, guided forest walks, Bigodi tours and also community tours.
The chimpanzee tracking experiences in Kibale forest national park can be done in the morning and afternoon and provide exciting moments for tourists to see the chimpanzees among the trees and on the ground and to spend time with the chimpanzees and watch their behavior.
- Kidepo valley national park
Tourists that prefer a more remote wildlife viewing experience when visiting Uganda can opt for a safari around Kidepo valley national park which is located in the north eastern part of the country.
Kidepo valley national park is known for its vast wilderness where numerous wildlife species ca be seen during safaris and they include cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalos, impalas, leopards, lions, kudu, Uganda kobs, waterbucks, reedbucks, hyenas, warthogs and many others.
Activities which can be done around the national park include game drives, community tours with the Karamojong, the Ik tribe among others, bird watching, guided nature walks and also hiking.
- Queen Elizabeth national park
Located in the south western part of Uganda, Queen Elizabeth national park is another safari destination which is popularly visited by tourists.
Queen Elizabeth national park has unique attractions such as the tree climbing lions which can be seen in the Ishasha sector. Many other wildlife species are found in the national park and they include elephants, hippos, buffalos, leopards, hyenas, impalas, waterbucks, elands, hartebeests, bushbucks, topi among others.
Different parts of Queen Elizabeth national park can be visited during safaris in Uganda and they include the Mweya peninsula, Kazinga channel, Kasenyi plains, Kyambura gorge and also the Katwe area where activities such as morning and afternoon game drives, lion tracking, bird watching, chimpanzee tracking, mongoose tracking, visiting the salt lakes, boat safaris among others take place on safari.
- Zziwa rhino sanctuary
The Zziwa rhino sanctuary is the only destination where tourists can see rhinos during their safaris in Uganda. It is located in Nakasongola district and can be visited on the way to Murchison falls national park.
The sanctuary offers rhino tracking experiences during which tourists can move on foot and search for the rhinos in their natural habitat and enjoy watching them closely. Other activities to do around the Zziwa rhino sanctuary include Shoebill experience, canoeing, bird watching, wildlife viewing and nature walks.
- Mabamba wetlands
The Mabamba wetlands are located on Lake Victoria and are among the most visited destinations in Uganda for bird lovers.
The Shoebill Stork is among the bird species that tourists can see during their visit to the Mabamba swamp. Visiting the wetlands is done on boat and the Shoebill experience can take the whole day and tourists enjoy seeing the various bird species around the destination.
- Sipi falls
Another destination which is most visited in Uganda is the Sipi falls located in the eastern part of Uganda at the foot hills of Mount Elgon.
The Sipi falls are 3 in number and visiting the destination involves engaging in activities such as hiking to the falls, coffee tours, community tours, abseiling and also visiting the caves.
- Jinja
Jinja is a destination which is famous among the adventurous tourists during their tours around the eastern part of Uganda.
Some of the activities to do in Jinja include white water rafting, bungee jumping, quad biking, kayaking, horse riding, boat ride on the source of the Nile and many other activities.
- Mount Rwenzori
One of the famous hiking destinations in Uganda is Mount Rwenzori which is located in the south western part of the country.
The highest point on the mountain is the Margherita peak and there are different routes used for hiking to get to the summit of Mount Rwenzori and these include central circuit trail, Kilembe trail and the Bukurungu trail.
