Lake Burera And Lake Ruhondo – Rwanda’s Twin lakes
Lake Burera And Lake Ruhondo: Rwanda is a very beautiful country and boosts of breathtaking scenery with a number of highlands and water bodies all over the country. Rwanda is a landlocked country bordered by Uganda in the north and the Democratic republic of Congo in the west, Burundi in the south and Tanzania in the east. This small landlocked county is sited on an area of 26,338 kilometers and is famously known as the land of a thousand hills because of the topography of the country.
The twin lakes of Rwanda known as the Burera and Ruhondo are a few of the water bodies of the country and these scenic lakes are located in between Musanze, a town popular for hosting guests looking for a mountain gorilla trekking experience and the Ugandan border that is the Cyanika border. These twin lakes are known as twin lakes because of their closeness and are only separated by a 1 kilometer wide strip of land. The twin lakes however at some other points join to pour into each other and the total area that both lakes sit on is about 2,800 hectares.
The twin lakes Burera and Ruhondo are fed by rivers and a lake in Uganda as they were formed as a result of volcanic activity. This volcanic activity was when the Mount Muhabura erupted and later created a dormant crater lake. The lakes there after filled the crater being fed by the river Nyabarongo meaning twins in the local language spoken in the area. The river Nyabarongo is the largest river on Rwanda and it created the twin lakes when the lava from the eruption blocked the pathway of the river. This Nyabarongo River flows the other side east to connect and join the Akanyaru River that is a source for the Akagera River where the Akagera national park, the savannah national park of Rwanda derived its name.
